Fall 2006 Grant Awards

In the Fall 2006 grant cycle, PAPSF awarded $250 to each PAISD recognized school.  The schools are: Houston, Lee, Travis and Austin.

Cheryl Simien, science teacher, Memorial High

7-8-9th Grade Campus, $1,000 to purchase a hand-held ProScope digital microscope to enable students to explore the microbial world of science.

Marilyn Hicke, physical education teacher, Franklin Elementary, $1,000 to incorporate language, grammar, math and science concepts into physical education through choreographed songs, chants and movement.  The money will be used to purchase equipment for the "shake and learn" method of teaching.

Linda Neal, dyslexia teacher at Dowling Elementary, $1,000 award to purchase and implement the QuickReads fluency program to improve reading skills of her students.

Mark Hill, physical education teacher, Franklin Elementary, $1,000 to upgrade equipment for the use of sixth grade students who were moved this year from Wilson School to Franklin.  The class currently has only hand-me-down equipment and is undersupplied.

Ericca Mendoza et al, kindergarten teachers at Sam Houston Elementary, $1,000 to purchase equipment, models, books, and living caterpillars (painted lady butterfly variety) to study life cycles of the butterfly and compare it with the life cycle of frogs.  This grant has been designated the Chevron Phillips Award.

Angela Raithel, fifth grade science teacher, Lee Elementary, $1,000 to purchase and incorporate a "Discovery Whodunit?" Forensics Lab project for her students.  Drawing on their interest in the currently popular television forensics shows, this project will encourage Raithel's classes to evaluate situations and go through the steps of scientific method to find answers to problems.  This project has been designated the North Port Arthur Rotary Aubrey T. Raiford Award.

Mustafa Abdul-Jabbar, world geography teacher, and Jennifer Schaeffer, Junior Honor Society sponsor, Memorial High 7-8-9th Grade Campus, $2,000 to develop a community garden as a community service project of the Honor Society and 9th grade Umoja leadership organization, and a student newsletter showcasing the garden and other school projects.  This project, the Valero Award, is co-sponsored by Valero Energy Corporation and PAPSF with matching $1,000 grants.  The Valero Volunteer Council will assist students with the project.
