Spring 2007 Grant Awards

Elaine Earl, teacher (Center in blue shirt), and counselor Jessica Nguyen (not in photo),  both at Dowling Elementary School, will conduct an interviewing project aimed at broadening their students' views of potential careers.  Their $800 grant will purchase a camcorder and remote control tripod for students to videotape their planned interviews with selected community members.  Their grant has been designated as the Retail Merchants Association Grant in recognition of RMA's generous donations to the grant program.

Jim Goza, who teaches integrated physics and chemistry at Memorial High School 9th Grade Campus, will use his $1,000 grant to purchase equipment and build student interest in the science and mathematics of rocketry.  Goza has used the building of model rockets as an extra credit project for the past two years.  After students build the rockets they write a research paper explaining the math and science laws affecting the flight and perform the math calculations needed to determine the altitude and velocity at which their project hopefully will fly.

Lynda Phillips, library media specialist at Franklin Elementary School, will purchase a new functional "reading rug" with her $800 grant.  The reading rug includes colored squares, which students use to learn colors, measurements, and positioning skills as they hear various children's stories read to them.

Nancy Ramirez and Ali Van Kleeck, kindergarten teachers at Travis Elementary School, will use their $1,000 team grant to continue their work of reclaiming what they call their "Kinder Garden" -- a small walled garden attached to one teacher's classroom -- as an outdoor science exploration center for kindergarten students.
